Queenslanders helping the Tsunami victims

An all-Queensland team of health and emergency services professionals known as ‘Team Foxtrot’ was deployed in the tsunami-devastated region of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to help rebuild lives and communities. The 24-person team of health, university and government professionals created a virtual complete patient management system. Using the state-of-the-art ‘Tac Pack’ involving satellite communications systems and an acute care rapid deployment system called ‘LifeMEDIC’, developed by a Brisbane-based company, patient care can be delivered in the hospital or at any remote location through mobile camera phones.

Fat Stoppers

The University of Queensland’s biotechnology company, Adipogen Pty Ltd, has identified a protein that stimulates production of the cells that store fat. The 47 per cent of Queenslanders who are overweight may soon benefit from their studies to design a mechanism to inhibit the action of this protein and so control body fat mass.
Less fat stored in the body may be an effective therapy for the treatment of such wide-spread diseases as Type II Diabetes. Adipogen has benefited from support through the Queensland Government’s Innovation Start Up Scheme and the BioStart Fund, which has helped it to establish a commercial structure and attract additional private investment.
