Mobilising the innovation process: targeted support to convert good ideas into results
Key initiatives include:
- Innovation Building Fund – $128M over 4 years to build innovation infrastructure
- Smart State Research Facilities Fund – an additional $20M for Round 4 in 2005
- Innovation Skills Fund – $12M over 4 years to support our innovation skills base
- Innovation Projects Fund – $60M over 4 years to support collaborative projects
Building the Queensland brand: expanding on our strengths, successes and recognition to take Queensland to the world

- Smart Sector Strategies to grow priority industry sectors
- Smart ICT – Taking it to the World – to grow the ICT industry & exports
- Queensland Aquaculture Development Initiative – $4M over 4 years
Making the right connections: investing in strategic alliances and networks
Key initiatives include:
- Smart State Council to provide advice on emerging trends in innovation and skills
- International Collaborations Program to support strategic alliances
- A virtual forum for Queenslanders to shape the future Smart State agenda
Building the foundations for a sustainable innovative society
As well as providing an immediate stimulus for innovation, Smart Queensland takes the long-term view by building Queensland’s capacity as an innovative society.
Investing in knowledge and skills:
New world – new learning: education to equip people with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to succeed in an innovative society
Key initiatives include:
- Smarter Learning – a consistent approach to assessing & reporting across all Queensland schools
- Smart Classrooms – access to learning beyond the traditional school grounds
- Smart Academies – academies of excellence in science, mathematics & technology; & in creative arts
New jobs – new skills: a training and higher education system enthusiastic about innovative enterprise and partnership with industry p44

- Modernise the Vocational & Education Training system to deliver flexible & responsive training
- Smart State University Internships to assist students become work-ready

Smart Queensland will increase Queensland’s appeal as a place to live, study, work and play, by creating a:
Dynamic Queensland: building a community that cares for its people and fosters and celebrates knowledge and creativity
Key initiatives include:
- Business and Skilled Migration Program promoting Queensland’s appeal to skilled workers
- Queensland Multicultural Festival and Images of Queensland, celebrating Queensland’s diversity
- Ideas Festival to encourage the exchange of ideas
Connected Queensland: infrastructure to strengthen our connectivity
Key initiatives include:
- Streamlined development approvals process for telecommunications infrastructure
- Online telecommunications information portal for business and communities
Sustainable Queensland: smart use of our natural resources
Key initiatives include:
- Premier’s Taskforce to develop a Sustainable Natural Resource Development Strategy
- International Water Centre – $2.4M over 4 years
- Innovative research to control the cane toad – $1M
